An a cappella piece for male voice choir (TTBB)

Just before Christmas 2017, I asked all my pupils to come up with a short musical idea that we would use to create a musical advent calendar (I had previously enjoyed writing one myself.) I decided to demonstrate to one adult pupil what you could do with a short theme… so I took his little two bar melody with lyrics and it turned into this piece.  I subsequently also arranged it for SATB. 

 

The lyrics refer to the star at Jesus’ birth guiding those to Him… and that we too will follow.

 

It is fairly contrapuntal throughout, with a couple of very short tenor and mezzo solos, that could be sung by competent choir members.
