Shared Teaching Tips

Over the years, like many teachers, I have found certain things to work really well, ideas that solve problems, solutions to helping pupils with technique, general musicianship, improvisation, develop aural skills and the “dreaded sight reading”! I thought it would be nice to share some of those ideas here, as the pooling of ideas can only but enhance piano teaching as a whole.

Innovative way to teach the reading of notation to beginners

This page shares my ideas of teaching beginners to develop good reading principals, a real understanding of what they are doing and at the same time, musicianship skills, by way of actually avoiding the conventional way of teaching reading by “one new note at a time.” Plenty of details can be found on the page!

Opening the door to improvisation

This is a fascinating subject, and there are plenty of thoughts and ideas here to help begin unlocking the door to improvisation.”

Are you struggling with notation or sight reading?

This page will offer help to those who are struggling with reading.

Some reading this may be new to both the instrument and music notation. Others will already be familiar with the instrument, maybe even playing brilliantly by ear, but find they struggle with notation (although would love to be able to enjoy reading through material, or simply slightly speed up their learning process of written music).

This page will help solve a few mysteries, and enable better understanding, and reading of , piano music.
