Pacem
Pacem
mezzo and piano (2’ 12’’)
Pacem was written as a piano piece, for a pupil who was not experiencing a very good time, but was still playing the piano – and found great solace in this. I wrote the piece as something simple, that could be played without too much difficulty by the player. As I wrote it, the word “pacem” kept singing in my head… so I wrote the words on the music, which lead me to arrange it for voice.
There are many different ways to say this word: prayerfully, quietly, as if asking for something… the performer can decode, although I have made some suggestions here and there.
The piece has a tranquil chord structure, with some poignant rising dissonances here and there.
Vocal range: B flat, just under middle C to F an octave above middle C.
Please note, the sound file here is an electronic file, so is wordless.
