Birthday Ode For a Lad Who Never Returned

This is a reflective piece about a young life lost at war. A birthday ode – for a lad who never made it home for his birthday. I was thinking of the two World Wars when I wrote this; it was not long after Remembrance Day, but it could be just as applicable to any era in history or present day. The tune uses the notes of the traditional tune of “Happy Birthday”, but with very different harmony with part way through, a hollow fanfare emerging from some of the notes reminiscent of the Last Post.
