Dark
Dark (6’ 30”)
This piece was begun as a demonstration during a piano lesson, to encourage “seeing” the possibility in anything played – even with eyes closed and random notes – on which to base an improvisation. I struck a D and E (7th) when demonstrating this… and instantly saw a possibility in it. I experimented as part of the demonstration: what would happen if just one of the notes moved down? The pupil commented, “Oh that’s very dark.” The title and the piece was born and the piece was written during the next two days. It is certainly dark in character for the most part, but towards the end, subtly shifts in character to a warm optimism.
Note – I have small hands, but can play this, although it has many octaves with either held lower or upper notes. Exceptionally small hands may struggle.
