After Poppy Day
After Poppy Day 4’ 38’’
The title comes from a poem, which was written after seeing a poppy, lying squashed and muddy in our church forecourt, the day after Remembrance Sunday in 2011. The poppy, to me, immediately suggested the image of a young life, wasted. The insignificance of this poppy drew a parallel in my mind, with that of the soldiers who lost their lives. Later, I set the poem to music with austere and twisted harmony.
Vocal range: B, (just below middle C) to C sharp and octave above.
