Ballade Duet
Ballade (piano duet – 1 piano, 4 hands) 2’ 51’’
One summer, one of my pupils said that she had been asked to play a duet at her next school concert. We decided on another of my pupils for a duet partner: one was grade five, the other had only been playing a short while, but had excellent co-ordination, and was around grade three. This piece was the result, which has subsequently been played by several different pairs of pupils.
It moves from C major to D major chords at the opening; this being a feature throughout, giving an “open” and spacious feeling. There is a sudden key change to Eb major in a lush middle section, which creates a soaring, free feel. Towards the end, there are several bars marked “espressivo” which have a particular emotional quality.
