Cantilena (5’ 30”) 

The story behind this piece… 

…we needed a birthday gift for a friend’s 50th birthday. The only problem was that due to circumstances, we had not been able to get to the shops, or indeed put much thought to a gift that we wanted to be special. We had four days. I then decided to make a special gift of a piece of music, as the friend plays the oboe… so I wrote this piece for her, got it bound up, in time to take on her special day. For this reason, I am very fond of it.

Later, when asked to step in and cover a canceled concert – (again with four day’s notice!) I used the piece to improvise on… and a piano arrangement was born…

It is a slow, dreamy piece to unwind to.
