Five Miniatures for Left Hand
Five Miniatures for Left Hand
This set of five short pieces was written for a pupil who had had an accident at school, and whose hand had become injured. Her hand would no longer function due to nerve problems and she was in considerable pain. Although there was physically nothing wrong with the hand, she was told by a doctor that she would probably lose the use of it due to the trauma: she was just thirteen. I saw in her lessons the potential for playing to help, and saw that the hand looked as though it would still function, discovered thus: I initially asked her to play a piece she knew well, eyes closed, with her RH, letting the LH sit on the keys. I could see minute movements in bare twitches… all at the correct moment when those fingers would play the notes from that left hand. It was at that moment, that I became convinced that she would not lose the use of it and it was then, that I decided to write some pieces for the left hand for her. Through her piano playing, she gained the use of her hand again, and went on to grade five level (UK). Music’s triumph.
These pieces may also be played be either hand. I hope that they may help someone else enjoy music, even when only one hand is available. They can, of course be also played using both hands.
All movements in the sound file below.
