Holly (counter tenor)

Holly – there are three versions of this piece:

Counter tenor and organ

Counter tenor and bassoon

Counter tenor, bassoon and organ

This solo for counter tenor comes in three versions. It was written at the start of Advent, and is very suitable for either concert performance. or church service during this time.

The text looks at holly: and ponders its use in ancient times, the custom of decorating with it… and  reflects on the symbolism of its association with Christ’s passion. The poem on which the text is based is in the front of the “look inside” scores.

The sound files are electronic.

Please print as many copies as you need for the players. PLEASE NOTE: the bassoon part is included in the download.

Description

Holly (counter tenor) – the story behind the writing of this piece:

“Holly”, was written at the start of Advent, after I had watched and listened to “Jesus Christ The Apple Tree”, posted on Facebook by a musician friend. I suddenly had the urge to set a poem I had written a few days before: “Holly”. I went straight to the piano and started to write, but before long, had written a choral piece of the same title, based on the same text (not my intention!) but I went with it anyway! A few days later, and I was able to write what I had first intended to: a counter tenor solo with organ accompaniment. Subsequently, I felt a high, hollow bassoon, playing in the upper far reaches of its register, would work well, and then made a third version combining all three.
