Narrated, orchestrated story of a little acorn… to a mighty oak…

The story behind “Nugget”– how it all began…

It began with an adult piano pupil’s suggestion for an autumn walk to inspire musical creativity….a small group of us went on the walk, I picked up an acorn, and asked how a piece of music would begin for an acorn falling off a tree…? “a single note” came back the reply… we heard a distant train hoot, wondered if the note was an “A” and the piece had begun.

I thought it would be nice if all pupils joined in, not just those who went on the walk…

One pupil came up with a theme in his lesson on Monday and then followed on a flood of creative ideas each week, from themes and story lines to ideas for orchestration – even the title. Each week, I orchestrated those ideas… and on 14th March 2020, “Nugget” was finally completed.

I have a brightly coloured music score on my laptop – every one who contributed has been allocated a colour, to show their themes and ideas… a wonderful musical and inspiring journey of musical creativity for all of us… and I wish others joy listening too.

 

 

Ideal for a children’s concert and a wonderful way to engage them with nature, with the topic of preserving and planting native trees at the heart of HRH The Prince of Wales’ “Treebilee” in 2021. 

A concert followed by a walk somewhere to see such an oak tree (or indeed, any tree; tiny sapling or mighty, full grown) with a picnic would be the most wonderful way to unite musical inspiration with that of our surroundings….I think I want to come!!
