October Sketches – for narrator and orchestra
October Sketches
October Sketches consists of 31 miniatures, depicting the wonders found in nature throughout the month of October, all linked by a poem for each of those movements. It would make a delightful addition to an autumn concert. There are musical descriptions of swirling autumn leaves, twirling seeds, popping seed pods, delicate flower blooms, the unexpected, “secret mushrooms” and the inevitable “drizzle day”, as well as triumphant fanfares from the brass of gold leaves. Suitable for any moderate amateur orchestra, as well as professional orchestras
Duration: 45 minutes (including the poetry)

Description
About the piece…
October Sketches began as a series of piano miniatures, written during the month of October, which came about as a writing project. A fellow poet on Instagram was experiencing “writer’s block” and I too was having trouble writing due to a personal sadness. She challenged her fellow writers to join her in “Inktober”: to write something, whether good or bad, every day throughout the month. I decided to join her, to support her, and also help myself. For me, the block was musical, so I decided to write a piano miniature every day of the month. As the original concept was for poetry, I also decided to write a poem each day too. I love nature, so the inspiration came from directly around me. Being me, I also took photos and decided to do a piece of artwork each day throughout the month too I recorded each piece straight after writing, and make all into a miniature video every day. All these can be found on Youtube, “October Sketches”. It was such an uplifting, and inspiring writing project, (although somewhat demanding!) that I was truly sorry when I finished it…hence finding new joy in orchestrating it!
Subsequently, I orchestrated them. The result is a continuous piece of 31 miniatures, linked by the poetry read between each movement.
