Pacem
Pacem (2’ 12’’)
Pacem was written for a pupil who was not experiencing a very good time, but was still playing the piano – and found great solace in this. I wrote this piece as something simple, that could be played without too much difficulty by the player. As I wrote it, the word “pacem” kept singing in my head… so I wrote them on the music. There are many different ways to say this word: prayerfully, quietly, as if asking for something… they are not meant to be sung out loud, but rather in one’s head as one plays, but there is no reason why they should not be sung out loud if a player wishes.
The piece has a tranquil chord structure, with some poignant rising dissonances here and there.
