Roses at Kypp Cottage (3’ 42”)

This piece was written after spending a weekend in Kent and staying with a lady at her home – Kypp Cottage. We had gone to visit some gardens in Kent – this being one of them. The garden was overflowing with roses, and we received such a warm welcome from someone who loved gardens and roses – and music. There was a great tranquility in the garden and the house – almost another world. These were two of the lady’s favourite roses, and the whole weekend made such an impression that I wrote these two little pieces and sent them as a gift.

Felicia

This is a very simple piece, just a single line for right hand. The lady could play a little – and I knew this was something she could attempt. The rose that inspired it has a soft pink old fashioned flower.

Cornelia

This, too, is a lovely old-fashioned rose in a very pale yellow. The music is gentle, delicate and frequently in the treble of the piano to reflect this.
