St. James’ (3’ 25”)

This little piano miniature was inspired by a photo sent to me by a friend, of a ruined church. The picture had so much serenity, it inspired this piece, a poem and a painting.

It evokes distant bells within a serene sound world….The photo of an abandoned church spoke to me immediately, suggesting a feeling of distant long forgotten bells and life of this church. A reflective piece, that also tries to capture some of the stillness that remains. An abandoned church is always poignant and somewhat sad to me.

There has now been a restoration of the ruin, and once more, services (open air) are held here once a year. This is the reason for the “Epilogue” in this piece: a rather beautiful turn in the story I did not know when I began writing it…
